Advocacy for Justice: Redefining Justice for Communities and Individuals

What Does Justice Mean to Us?

Justice is more than laws or state obligations—it is about equity, transformation, and addressing lived experiences. True justice must challenge structural inequalities, confront harmful cultural norms, and prevent further harm, avoiding the “double victimization” caused by inadequate systems. It must be holistic, meaningful, and deeply felt by those seeking it.

To us, justice means:

  • Dismantling Inequalities: Breaking down social and structural barriers that silence voices and perpetuate harm.
  • Exploring Alternatives: Moving beyond institutional solutions to embrace community-centred approaches prioritising healing, agency, and empowerment.
  • Leveraging Storytelling: Using stories as a tool for healing, advocacy, and influencing justice systems to be more inclusive and compassionate.

Justice addresses past harms while shaping a future founded on trust and empowerment. By redefining justice to centre the voices and experiences of those at the margins, we hope to create a world where justice is both an ideal and a lived reality for all.

What Are We Doing? (Include Links to project pages)

  • Creating Safe Spaces for Healing and Sharing: Through storytelling, we provide safe spaces for women survivors of Nepal’s armed conflict. These spaces enable them to share their experiences, heal, and build solidarity. Together, their collective voices inform and contribute to transitional justice processes.
  • Co-Developing Alternative Truth-Seeking Approaches: In collaboration with women survivors, we co-create informal, community-centered truth-seeking mechanisms. These alternatives go beyond judicial systems and legal frameworks, integrating healing, empowerment, and personal agency as key justice components.

By focusing on these initiatives, we aim to redefine justice as a process that centres lived experiences, prioritises healing, and empowers individuals to reclaim their narratives. We envision an inclusive, empathetic, and transformative justice framework. Justice should address past harms and enable individuals and communities to rebuild trust, restore dignity, and achieve equity.

Through advocacy, storytelling, and collective action, we aim to redefine justice—not as a distant legal concept but as a lived reality transforming lives and communities. In doing so, we aspire to contribute to a future rooted in trust, equity, and healing for all.
